Say It With Music
One day my chess class was cut short because of the "Say It With Music" program. In the program the kids who were selected eventually make a DVD of themselves.
The thing that worries me is that the kids migiht be learning ?rap instead of real music. This is a concern to me for sevreal reasons. First of all, ?rap is probably a fad. It is not lasting.
Second, black people need to be exposed to much more. It bothers me to go to the opera or symphony and see less than ten percent of the peole there are black when Baltimore is 65% black. The numbers are getting better, but they are still too low.
I also hope that the kids are learning some music theory. My biggest complaint about my music education is that it is almost non-existent. Once a week Sister Barbara would come and teach us hymns. Nobody really taught me how to sing.
Thanks to Fr. Ted of Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church I have a love for classical music. He once said "It is more important to listen to classical music than to listen to the news." At the time I did not understand this, but I think that I do today.
But I am really glad tha the kids are being exposed to various things through the Y of Central Maryland After School Program. |
