Chess Tournament

On Tuesday 18 November we had our first chess tournament of the year. My school, George Washington Elementary School, came in third. Behind us was Dunbar Middle School.

The tournament was a good experience for the kids. Some of them had never played in a tournament before and I think that they now understand how important are some of the things that I have been trying to teach them.

The tournament took place at Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church. The advantage of this is that it also gave the kids an exposure to a different culture. One site director wrote "Greek Orthodox Church" on her bus request. We told everybody that it would be at a Russian Orthodox Church. She did not even have the name of the church on the request. But she did have the correct address.

Another advantage is that it gave the church some exposure. Many people in the Baltimore area heard about the Russian Festival, but there are still many who have not.
