Chess Training

After the State Fair on Sunday 24 August 2008, I rushed to the Fells Point Chess Club for the training that was scheduled. I left the Fair 22 minutes late. I parked outside my church and walked about five blocks. But I had no problem finding a free parking spot.

When I got to the Chess Club, I noticed that I did not have my cell phone with me. I do remember using it that afternoon at the State Fair. It had fallen out of my pocket and was on the driver's seat of my car when I returned to the car. I was fortunate. Other people who left their cell phones in the car in that area had their cars broken into and the cell phone stolen.

Tavron Carter and Sophia Lewis taught us strategy. Tavron taught us the Colle System's opening for white. He said that you can't go wrong playing this. His chess rating is 1848, Master.

They also gave us puzzles to do. It was a fun evening and I think that all three of us learned some very valuable information. Quinton and Chrishawn were the other two students. Quinton and I often work together coaching chess at the Charles H. Hickey, Jr. School.

The Y of Central Maryland has a chess program for their After School programs. Children who play chess tend to do better in school. I have been playing chess since the fifth grade and I had become rather good at it. I still need to improve, of course. Now that I am a chess coach, this gives me an opportunity to improve.

We also have chess players at my church. At our last picnic (not the crabfeast) we had th5ree games going on simultaneously. I knew that Vera, Gregory, and Reader Joseph play chess, but I did not know that Albert also plays.
