I went to St. Nicholas Cathedral in Washington DC ["my cathedral"] before attending a birthday party later that evening. It was so nice to be back home and the music was angelic.
I wish that I could had photographed the expression on some people's face when I arrived. If nothing else, it really made me feel wonderful. I affectionally call St. Nicholas "my cathedral" because every Bishop is supposed to have a cathedral and St. Nicholas was my parish before I went to the seminary and they made a tremendous difference in my being able to complete my education. Plus I have so many wonderful memories from the parish, from the time I first started going there until my last day there before going to the seminary.
I also noticed some major physical changes, some of which were pointed out to me. There is much more room in the Altar. There is a new Proskomede table and the sacristry has been rearranged and it is gorgeous.
Deacon Sergius did not serve so that I could serve. I have plenty of opportunity to serve in my own parish as the only deacon, but not as the third deacon and we do things differently in my parish than at the cathedral. This is known as local custom. I really appreciate the opportunity. The next time that I serve Vigil at another parish with a deacon or two, I will feel much more comfortable since I do have some experience.
When I first returned to Washington DC back in the 1980s, Protodeacon Blagoje, his wife Kathy, and I sang in the choir at St. Luke Serbian Orthodox Church on Sixteenth Street NW. It was a wonderful parish and I really enjoyed it.
I transferred to St. Nicholas Cathedral and before his ordination to the priesthood and my srving on the altar, Fr. Constantine, Protodeacon Blagoje, and I all sang in the choir. So my return was also a mini-reunion.
