Ukrainian Festival Preparation

Holy Trinity Church is getting ready for two festivals: the Ukrainian Festival in Patterson Park and our own Russian Festival. These festivals will require much hard work, but we are up to it.

The first thing that I did when I arrived at the church was to go upstairs and take care of the candles for tomorrow's Liturgy. This took only a few minutes. When I asked Ms. Kay what she wanted me to do, she said, "Do what you do best - take pictures." So I did.

Later I was talking with Mary Ann and we concur that these photographs are important for the history of the parish. If nothing else, we have proof that certain people were there helping. Twenty years from now perhaps somebody will say to their children, "There is Uncle or Aunt xxx helping with our Festival." Or maybe a child will proudly point to a picture and tell somebody else that this is his grandparent.

I also have two beliefs about a good photographer. The first one is that as much as possible, the photographer should not be seen. The exception to this rule is when he has to set up a picture. He should be recording the event and not necessarily creating it. Studio setting is a noted exception to this rule. There the photographer is the boss and he is creating the event.

The second rule is that the photographer should not be in the way. There has to be a fine balance between the need for the photographs and the need for the subject to accomplish the task. Some people did not apear in many of my pictures because I would be risking interferring with what was being done.
