Pentecost 2006

Every visit to Christ the Savior Mission is full of joy and blessings. The trip on Pentecost Sunday 2006 was no exception. One of the highlights of the visit was the Kneeling Vespers of Pentecost Sunday and hearing the choir and people attempting to sing the Great Prokemenon. In my parish, we sing it straight and this is unacceptable to me, especially after hearing it done the correct way.

A factor is making the trip was a conversation with Nick Stchur of St. Andrew Orthodox Church. My biggest concern was the mileage on my car and Nick told me that since I had the transmission replaced, the car should be good for another 100,000 miles.

It was a real blessing serving on the altar and also taking photographs. God has given each of us talents and to me to be able to combine two talents to serve God is awesome. Even more awesome is the fact that I can share these photographs with you.

We had the Liturgy and immediately after the Liturgy we had a modified Vespers with the Kneeling Prayers. I chanted "Vouchsafe, O Lord" between the second and third Kneeling Prayers. The people also sang a couple of versions of the Troparion of the Feast.

This weekend also was to be a farewell reception for the Homsy and Saunders families who are being transferred elsewhere. This was announced in the bulletin along with a welcome to me and to Albert McCarthy. I knew Albert from my cathedral in Washington DC and it was quite a surprise to see him again this weekend.

By the way, I was received into the Orthodox Church on or around Pentecost Sunday 1973 by the late Father Gregory Pelesh, Chaplain, Captain, United States Air Force. Fr. Gregory and I crossed paths several times since then. He was also instrumental in my becoming a chaplain in the Civil Air Patrol, auxiliary of the United States Air Force.

This was also the second anniversary of the Mission. Their first liturgy was on Pentecost 2004. Last year we served at a restaurant owned by an Albanian family who was so gracious to offer the facility until the mission was able to get a more permanent home.
