St. Demetrios Greek Festival
Thanks to a wonderful family at my former parish, St. Andrew Orthodox Church, I have a car. As a result, I was able to attend the Greek Festival at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.
I spent most of the time inside. I was really impressed by the physical plant that the parish has, especially by the acres of greenery. My real regret is that I did not take more money with me.
Tina gave a wonderful tour of the church. She really knows her iconography. Collette, an iconographer and former classmate, was displaying her icons and it was really wonderful being able to spend time with her and catching up on news, etc.
If you have not visited St. Demetrios Church and seen the wonderful iconography all around the temple, I strongly recommend that yo do so.
In Orthodox theology, icons are a window to heaven. They are also a means of teaching, especially before the printing press was invented. People could not read books, but they could read the icons. You might notice today that we are reverting back to this practice of instruction through pictures. For several of the items which I assembled, the instructions were strictly in pictures.
